T&T Hosts ICAO’s 8th North American and Caribbean Civil Aviation Training Centres Working Group Meeting

From 12 – 14 June 2024 Trinidad and Tobago will host the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Eighth North American and Caribbean Civil Aviation Training Centres Working Group Meeting under the auspices of the Trinidad and Tobago Civil Aviation Authority (TTCAA).

The working group, which is comprised of Directors of Civil Aviation Training Centres in the North American and Caribbean regions, was established to coordinate training initiatives to more efficiently address existing needs and to promote the development of civil aviation in the participating regions. Training is also critical in order to guarantee safe and efficient air transport in the regions, therefore efforts must be coordinated, standardized and efficiently harmonized in order to obtain the highest levels of safety and aviation security.

Opening the proceedings was Senator the Honourable Rohan Sinanan, Minister of Works and Transport. In his presentation Minister Sinanan stated that “The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is committed to the development of the civil aviation sector. Aviation is a key driver of economic development as it opens the possibilities for trade, supports sectors such as tourism and manufacturing and facilitates global development. The Ministry of Works and Transport continues to strategically invest to ensure that our regulatory framework meets the global standards, thus providing the right climate for the sector to grow.”

Minister Sinanan reiterated that “This meeting stands as a testament to the Government’s unwavering dedication to fostering collaboration, enhancing training standards, and ensuring the highest levels of competency within the civil aviation sector”.

Participants were also addressed by Mr. Fernando Camargo, Regional Officer, Technical Assistance, North American, Central American and Caribbean Office; Capt. Thomas E. Lawrence, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the TTCAA; and Mr. Cary Price, Director General of Civil Aviation, TTCAA.

During the course of the Meeting, several critical issues will be addressed including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in training and a standard training programme for Government
inspectors.

In attendance are participants from the Caribbean region, North and Central America, ICAO and other affiliated organisations.

The TTCAA currently operates a Civil Aviation Training Centre which was established in 1963. It offers a wide range of technical, operational and management programmes to local, regional and international markets. It has earned the distinction as one of the leading aviation training institutions in the Caribbean region having produced over 2000 Air Traffic Control professionals.
